Forecasts describe a region

A marine forecast is an essential starting point, not a guarantee of the conditions at one inlet, shoal or shoreline. Local geography can accelerate wind, stack waves against current and create steep transitions near shallow water.

Review more than one time window and continue monitoring. A safe outbound run can become a difficult return if wind direction or storm timing changes.

Wave period changes the experience

Two forecasts with the same wave height can feel completely different. Short-period waves are closer together and may produce repeated impact with little recovery time. Longer-period swell can carry more energy and interact with inlets, shoals and opposing wind.

Boat length, speed, heading and hull type change the encounter. There is no single speed or trim response that applies to every sea.

Visibility and traffic
